This week is the first week that we're reviewing the contents of the top fourty. And let me tell you, I sincerely hope they've published it backwards by accident…
We have got a new number one. DJ Khaled's roped in Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper and Lil Wayne (in that order) for the execrable I'm the One, a downtempo track with looped screams throughout; it's like listening to the contents of a deranged person's mind, it's horrible. I'll take DJ Khaled's earlier #78 hit I'm On One with Drake, Rick Ross & Lil Wayne over this any day.
At #26 is Cheat Codes' No Promises featuring Demi Lovato, and I'm wondering if having two vocalists on it is too much. The record might have worked with just Cheat Codes' male vocalist on it, it would almost certainly have worked with Lovato singing throughout, but as it stands it sounds crowded, like the male vocalist only piped up for a few more royalties.
I thoroughly enjoyed this week's #31 Attention by Charlie Puth. It's got a real funky beat to it, almost as though it could have been played by Nile Rodgers himself (it isn't, else he'd be credited), and the venom Puth spits on the vocal is magnificent. We hope this does well.
Now at #34 is a collaboration I was not expecting: Kygo & Ellie Goulding, for First Time. Goulding's frog-in-throat vocals are perfect for what are unusually haunting synthesisers from Kygo; we do wish it had a proper third verse on it and not some perfunctory post-chorus, but overall it works exceedingly well. We hope we don't get a whole album of this, because this particular sound might not work as well with other singers, but as a one-off track it's enjoyable.
The best record on the top 40 this week has got to be Katy Perry's Bon Appétit at #40, with its driving trap-pop beats and seductive double entendres. It's in a different class to Chained to the Rhythm. But grrr! Why did she think it necessary to recruit Migos for the third verse? Everything, literally everything that band touches turns to mold! Have a bit more confidence in your records.
