A deathly quiet week this week. The Official Charts Company have not published a list of new releases this week – most likely due to New Year office hours – and frankly we've got statistics coursework due in over the next couple of weeks, so this will be a very short issue indeed.
We regret to chronicle the death of Debbie Reynolds aged 84 on 28 December 2016 from complications of a stroke. She had charted at #2 with Tammy from the film of the same name. Her daughter, Carrie Fisher, had passed away the previous day; this coupled with the death of Zsa Zsa Gabor's son Oliver Prinz von Anhalt a week after her death and my father's very poor health owing to bile duct cancer means I am currently fearing for my life.
Last week, we said we were tunnelling down the charts; we're now reviewing the top four, and at #4 is Touch by Little Mix, a particularly enervating track sufficiently sickly sweet enough to make Shout Out to My Ex sound like Nas' Ether.
Interestingly, both Greg Lake and George Michael have had tracks of their re-enter the charts: Michael's Careless Whisper, Faith and Mum's favourite record Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me ft. Elton John are at #44, #64 and #91 respectively, while Wham!'s Last Christmas rises to #7. It's the third highest peaking track this year, following When Christmas Comes Around by Matt Terry (#3) and All I Want For Christmas Is You (#5). What will it take to get Carey to the top spot she has been waiting for since 1994? Her death? Nope – according to some commentators, that happened New Year's Eve after a truly shambolic performance at Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.
